About Us

ANIDAN is an NGO, founded by Rafael Selas, to care for the needs of young children in Kenya. On the island of Lamu, off the northern coast, he has a Shelter where he houses one hundred children but feeds, dresses, cares for and educates over two hundred.

Since March 2008, in collaboration with the Pablo Horstmann Foundation, he runs a pediatric hospital which sees 80 patients a day and plans to distribute 15,000 child sanitary cards for free medical attention.

He also does fundraising for a population impoverished by the drought and conflicts which are the bane of this part of Africa.

The Beginnings

In 2002, Rafael, a 30 year old Spaniard, went to Lamu with the idea of renting a house in order to care for some of the children which, during a previous visit, he had seen garbage picking or begging with obvious signs of malnutrition and abandonment.

It was a personal initiative which he funded with his limited resources. He soon had twenty children and realized that his original project had to expand on more solid grounds since working in Africa is a demanding environment where desperate cases appear everyday.

With the help of family and some friends, Rafael founded

ANIDAN, Aid Children of Africa, a non-profit, non-political, non-religious organization which spreads word of the activities and collects funds which are sent to the local NGO, ANIDAN Kenya, in order to carry out projects in that country.

ANIDAN was constituted in Madrid in 2002 and registered with the Ministry of Interior, qualifying as an organization for the public benefit, whereby the donations receive the corresponding tax benefits.

Our Organization

Rafael devotes his time completely to caring for the children and developing the Project. He lives in Lamu, where he manages the Shelter, promotes and coordinates the different programs of humanitarian aid and maintains the Pablo Horstmann Pediatric Hospital. At times, he travels to Spain to promote the NGO and to look for new sponsors and funding.

All the staff in Africa, except for the Spanish doctors who rotate in the Hospital and Rafael, are Kenyans. The majority are young people who, thanks to us, have dignified employment.

All the activites are carried out by the native team. They receive the necessary training and benefit from the experience of collaborating with professionals from Spain. By training the staff, who will remain working there, we are contributing to the development of the area and reducing dependence on external resources.

The employment of Kenyans has other advantages: fluid communication with the children and their families, promotion of individuals in the communities, an eventual professional opportunity for some of our own children and lower costs. We are also contemplating the possibility of them taking responsibility for the project themselves.

In Spain, a group of volunteers handles the monitoring, administration, diffusion, promotion and fundraising. They are all professionals who also generously handle the needs regarding legal advice, building design, writing or composition of texts, which is why over 90% of the contributions are sent to Kenya to be used for the children, the Shelter, the hospital and the aid programs.

We vie for efficiency and transparency. Our size and methods make us transparent, the persons who visit us are our maximum verifiers, our accounts are audited and available to the public.
