Lamu

The place we work is an island off the northern coast of Kenya with a population of over 20,000.

To talk about Lamu is to talk about Africa, a forgotten world where living conditions experience constant deterioration due to Aids, poverty, lack of drinking water, ethnic conflicts and war.

Scourged by drought lasting many years, the Island suffers starvation which is the plight of millions in the south of Africa. The lack of basic nourishment and the political crisis at the end of 2007 and the beginning of 2008, accompanied by the wave of violence, has drastically reduced tourism, the main source of income in Kenya.

The situation is worsened with the arrival of refugees from neighboring tribes, Boni, Horma, Polkomo, Borana, Giriama and/or Bajun, fleeing from the insecurity and violence generated by war in neighboring Somalia and the misery of parched land. They come here with almost nothing and find a land with very little to give them.
