With the help of Dr. Ana Sendagorta and the Pablo Horstmann Foundation, we have built a hospital on the land with the Shelter, for children who need medical treatment and cannot afford it. The opening of the pediatric hospital last March and the support of the Foundation, which manages the medical staff and expenses, has been a vast improvement for Lamu and is a great satisfaction for ANIDAN.
In these few months, we have been able to see the benefits. We have patients from the islands and from a large area of the continent where there is no access to regular medical attention. They travel dozens of kilometers to come and are even being sent to us from other hospitals.
Thanks to the continuous activity at the hospital, the daily efforts of the doctors and staff, and the extended sanitary campaigns which we carry out, we expect to reduce the high percentage of infant mortality that exists in this area.
A permanent team of two rotating Spanish volunteer doctors, pediatricians and specialists in infectious diseases, together with visits from other specialists for specific campaigns, guarantees the attention given to the children and improves the training of the native staff. Within a few days of its opening, an average of 80 children per day were being given medical attention at the Hospital.
